Thousands Raised For Charity (August 2007)

Award-winning celebrities and best-selling artists helped Sandwell Asian Family Support Service (SAFSS) celebrate its 21st anniversary, and raised thousands of pounds in the process.

International stars including chart-topping performer Taz, music producer Mukhtar Sahota and singer-songwriter Am’nico wow-ed the 400 capacity crowd at the dinner and dance event managed by Best of Both Worlds.

Hosted by the BBC’s Satnam Rana and BBC Asian Network’s Sukhi Bart over £4,500 was raised to support SAFSS work with South Asian children and young people with disabilities. Performances by Hitesh (Man from Africa) and Rama, the Aashiyana Dance Company, and dhol playing by Made of Music showcased the best in British Asian Entertainment and made for an exceptional evening.

Chief Executive Parpinder Dhatt said ” What a fantastic night! Thank you to everyone who attended and who has supported SAFSS through this event. To have so many people under one roof, coming together to celebrate the successes and achievements of children and young people with disabilities was overwhelming. It was lovely to see our children and young people dancing and thoroughly enjoying themselves alongside our sponsors, supporters, friends and family. “

Davinder Sandhu, Chair of the Board of Trustees said “This is the first event SAFSS has organised in our 21 year history and I am proud of how well the event was organised and managed and how much all those who attended enjoyed the evening. My sincere thanks to everyone who has supported SAFSS through this event. ”

The event highlighted the issues faced by South Asian children and young people with disabilities and their families through a show-reel of SAFSS services and work. Parent Mussrat Parveen said, “The event was good and the SAFSS show-reel introduced some of the difficulties and issues that South Asian families who have a child with a disability face.”

The event raised funds for activities and trips for South Asian children and young people with disabilities thanks to sponsorship from local companies including Big Johns, Bright Ideas, Hallbrookes Accountants, Khazana, Mann and Co solicitors and Shere Khan. A number of local organisations are also supporting the event.
