‘OUTSTANDING’ Charity Receives Award (September 2007)

The ‘outstanding’ work of local charity, Sandwell Asian Family Support Service has been recognised by a childcare award.

Awarded by the Early Years and Childcare Unit of Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council at their Celebration Event Awards evening, the Smethwick-based organisation won ‘Out of School Club 2007’ for “outstanding practice and examples of creativity for its work with South Asian children and young people with disabilities.” The aim of the awards evening was to highlight the work of childcare practitioners in the borough and the benefits of good quality childcare in the borough.

Chief Executive Parpinder K Dhatt said “ We are delighted that our work with South Asian children and young people with disabilities has been recognised by the Early Years and Childcare Unit Award. To win ‘Out of School Club 2007’ for outstanding practice and creativity is an honour and an achievement for all our staff that work hard to make a difference to the lives of children and young people with disabilities.

The Smiling Stars After School Club was established in 2001 and provides a range of activities for South Asian children aged 3-18 years who have a disability. Sessions run on Tuesdays and Thursdays 3-6pm, and Saturdays’ 11am - 4pm. SAFSS currently have vacancies on their After School Club sessions on Tuesday’s and Thursdays. The award follows a very successful six months for the charity. SAFSS received an ‘outstanding’ in its’ After School Club Ofsted inspection in August and received a ‘Good’ from the Commission for Social Care Inspectorate (CSCI) following it’s inspection of its’ domiciliary care service. SAFSS has also worked closely with the local community and held a very successful trip to Thorpe Park for over 190 children and young people with disabilities and their families. SAFSS also celebrated its’ 21st anniversary with a star-studded event and raised over £4,500 for activities for children and adults with disabilities.

1.Sandwell Asian Family Support Service provides a range of quality care support services and opportunities to enable South Asian children and young people with disabilities and their families to enhance their quality of life. All SAFSS’ services users are of South Asian origin (Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani) and are aged 0-35 years.
